Danson wed Casey Coates, his second wife, in 1977. Coates and Danson spent sixteen years of marriage. They have two daughters together. 

Actress Randy Gosch was his first spouse; they were wed in 1970 and got divorced in 1975. In 1989, he was joined at Cirque du Soleil on the Santa Monica Pier by his two children, Kate and Alexis.
