Ruth Beatrice Henig, Baroness Henig, was a British academic historian and Labour Party politician, known for her contributions to academia, politics, and public service.

Baroness Ruth Henig, a figure in British politics, sadly passed away on February 29, 2024.

Born Ruth Beatrice Munzer on November 10, 1943, she rose to fame as a Labour Party politician, historian, and respected leader in the security industry.

Throughout her career, Baroness Henig served as Chair of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) from 2007 to 2013, where she spearheaded efforts to enhance public protection and regulation.

She received honors such as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to policing and was appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire.

Simon Antony Henig, the son of the late Baroness Ruth Henig was born in June 1969.

Born to Ruth Henig, a respected historian and former Chair of the Security Industry Authority, and Stanley Henig, a former Labour MP and council leader, Simon Henig grew up immersed in a family dedicated to public service and community leadership.

Simon’s early education at Moorside Primary School and Lancaster Royal Grammar School laid the foundation for his future journey.

He later pursued higher education at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he honed his academic skills and developed a passion for politics.

Henig’s political career began in earnest when he was elected as a councilor in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, in 1999.

Over the years, he assumed various roles within the Labour Party, including serving as the agent for North Durham CLP and chairing the North East Regional Board.

Although he narrowly missed becoming the Labour candidate for the Sedgefield parliamentary seat in 2007, his dedication to local politics remained unchanged.

From 2008 to 2021, Henig held the position of Leader of Durham County Council, where he demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to serving the community.

Under his leadership, the local Labour Party secured substantial electoral victories, solidifying its position as a dominant force in County Durham politics.

In addition to his political career, Henig is also an accomplished academic, lecturing in politics at the University of Sunderland.

His specialization in psephology, the study of elections, underscores his deep understanding of the political landscape and electoral dynamics.

He has authored several publications, including “The Political Map of Britain” and guides to the 2005 and 2010 General Elections, showcasing his expertise in British politics.

They have two children and reside in Chester-le-Street, where Henig remains deeply rooted in the community.

Ruth Henig’s ex-husband Stanley Henig, was a British academic and former Labour Party politician.

Born on July 7, 1939, in Leicester, he came from a family with a rich political legacy.

His father, Sir Mark Henig, served as Lord Mayor of Leicester and was the first chairman of the English Tourist Board.

Stanley Henig received his education at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys and Corpus Christi College, Oxford.

He started a career in academia, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Department of Politics at Lancaster University in 1964.

Throughout his career, he also taught at prestigious institutions such as the University of Warwick, the Civil Service College, and the University of Central Lancashire.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Henig ventured into politics and was elected as Member of Parliament for Lancaster in the 1966 general election.

Although he lost his seat in 1970, he remained active in local politics, eventually becoming the leader of Lancaster City Council in the 1990s.

Despite their divorce in 1993, they remained connected through their shared commitment to public service.

Together, they raised two sons, one of whom is Simon Henig, a psephologist and former Leader of the Labour-controlled Durham County Council.

After her divorce from Stanley Henig in 1993, Ruth Henig remarried in 1994 to Jack Johnstone.
