Jeanette Epps is an American astronaut and aerospace engineer who was chosen to travel with SpaceX Crew-8 to the International Space Station in early 2024.
Epps attended the University of Maryland, where she was a NASA GSRP Fellow and a member of the rotor-craft research group, to get both of her degrees in aeronautical engineering.
She graduated from NASA’s 20th class of astronauts in 2011 after being selected in 2009.
Epps qualified as an astronaut in 2011 after being chosen as an astronaut candidate for the 20th class of NASA astronauts in June 2009.
She received intensive instruction in geology, robotics, spacewalk, and Russian. She has also attended the National Outdoor Leadership School & finished her training as a T-38 jet.
Epps performed the analog astronaut missions NEEMO 18 and CAVES 19, and he is currently employed with the ISS Operations Branch.

Jeanette Epps was born in Syracuse, New York, to her parents Henry and Lubert.
She was born, with her twin sister, Janet, as the youngest of seven with two other sisters and three brothers. She was quite good at math and science, as was her twin sister Janet.
At nine years old, Jeanette Epps was living on Syracuse’s South Side when the door to space initially opened.
Jeanette older brother went home at the family’s West Kennedy Street house, on a break from college once.
He told Epps and her twin Janet that they may become astronauts or aerospace engineers someday, given how well they scored in math and science.
Aerospace engineers were unfamiliar to Jeanette Epps, and becoming an astronaut seemed nearly unattainable.
Still, she could never close her eyes to the possibility of a life greater than Syracuse. Epps mentioned, “That moment really stuck with me.”
Over the years, Epps kept track on NASA’s astronaut selection procedure, but he was always concerned that he would not be chosen.
Epps overcame her trepidation and applied to the program. On June 23, 2009, she received a call from NASA announcing her selection for the organization’s upcoming astronaut class.
That little girl from West Kennedy Street is finally traveling to space, more than 40 years later.
Nonetheless, Jeanette is the second woman and first African-American woman to have participated in CAVES.
