Paul Alexander Paralyzed Due To Polio: Weight Loss Rumors

Living in an iron lung, people wonder if Paul Alexander has shed the weight consistently with an unconventional respirator and life-long paralysis through polio.

The sad demise of Paul Alexander, the paralytic polio survivor and lawyer from Dallas, Texas, due to coronavirus has shaken the community.

At the age of six, he contracted polio and was encased in an iron lung, being one of the longest-living people in a mechanical respirator in Guinness World Records.

Despite his disability, he earned a scholarship to Southern Methodist University and taught legal terminology at Austin Trade School.

Paul Alexander held bachelor’s degrees and a Juris Doctor in 1978 and 1984.

Moreover, he inked down a memoir titled Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung in April 2020 with the help of his companion, Norman D.

Paul Alexander Succumbed To Polio And Ensuing Paralysis

At the age of six, Paul Alexander suffered from a high fever, soared limbs, and severe neck pain. Doctors advised him not to get hospitalized because of over-flooded patients in hospitals.

Due to polio, he couldn’t perform daily routines like swallowing, breathing, and holding things. Hence, a surgeon performed an emergency tracheotomy and exerted congested air out, which his paralyzed body couldn’t do.

After three days, Alexander was encased inside a mechanical respirator, an iron lung, to simplify his respiration.

For eighteen months, he could barely talk and hear doctors murmuring about his deteriorating health condition with an iron lung.

Doctors compelled him to attempt breathing without the use of his lungs, resulting in him turning blue and losing consciousness.

Alexander also described a moment when he ingested air almost akin to breathing, a technique termed “glossopharyngeal breathing.”

This method involves trapping air in the mouth and throat by flattening the tongue and opening the throat as if preparing to say “ahh” to a doctor.

With the mouth shut, the throat muscles push the air downward past the vocal cords and into the lungs. Paul simplified this technique as “frog-breathing,” which elongated his life expectancy.

Paul Alexander Weight Loss Rumors Linked To Polio And Paralysis

As far as medical research claims, polio isn’t directly related to weight loss, but the complications from the infirmity lead patients to lose pounds.

Due to the difficulty in swallowing and breathing caused by polio, a patient can hardly have food and a proper metabolism.

Additionally, the weakness and fatigue from polio can make it challenging to stay active and keep muscle mass, which can affect weight

Since Alexander had limited mobility and physical activity, his body composition was altered with a big head, thinner torso, and limbs.

Alexander had a tough time taking care of his iron lung, paying for healthcare, and finding a place to live that fit his needs.

He dwelt in a small room without any windows.
