Mei Leung’s Parents Kept A Low Profile And Her Mother, Yuk Yin Leung, Chose Silence Over Spotlight

Born on August 3, 1974, Mei Leung was a nine-year-old girl whose heartbreaking murder in 1984 became a pivotal case in the history of San Francisco.

She was from China but was residing with her family in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco.

Highlights

  • Mei Leung’s parents maintained a low profile, additionally, her father’s name remains unknown to the public.
  • Mei was one of the three kids of her father and mother; she was growing up alongside her brother and sister.
  • After losing Mei, her family moved from Tenderloin to San Francisco.

What occurred to Mei was utterly inhumane, and it all took place on April 10, 1984. On that day, she was reported missing after searching for a dollar bill that had fallen down the stairs while she was returning home with her younger brother.

Tragically, her body was discovered in the basement of their residential hotel shortly after she was reported missing. Her brother had initially gone to search for her and returned to find her lifeless body. She had been r*ped, st*bbed, and str*ngled to d*ath.

Now, losing a child is an incredibly difficult experience, and the nature of Mei’s case has taken a significant toll on her family. However, what made things more hard for her parents was that the k*ller was still out roaming around.

For many years after the tragedy, Mei did not receive justice. Her case remained unsolved until new evidence emerged. In 2009, DNA testing revealed that she was one of the victims of Richard Ramirez, the infamous serial k*ller known as the Night Stalker.

Mei Leung Parents Kept A Low Profile And Her Mother, Yuk Yin Leung, Avoided The Media

Mei Leung’s tragic demise in 1984 sent shockwaves through San Francisco, and most of it affected her family. However, they, particularly her parents, maintained a low profile.

However, unlike her father, one of Mei’s parents shared little insight into her family. Her mother, Yuk Yin Leung, initially spoke to reporters after the tragedy but later withdrew from the public eye.

This decision likely stemmed from a profound desire for privacy, allowing the family to grieve without the constant scrutiny of media attention.

Talking about Mei’s mother, Yuk Yin Leung and her family left Hong Kong to start a new life in San Francisco in 1980.

She worked at a restaurant and took care of her three children, including Mei, a son, and a daughter.

As already mentioned, the family made their home in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco, a rough part of town where the kids grew up. However, Mei’s m*rder changed their lives forever.

After Mei’s demise, the family left the Tenderloin. They stayed in San Francisco but kept their new address to themselves.

Years later, when people found out who k*lled Mei, her parents felt some relief. But they didn’t want to talk to reporters, staying out of the spotlight as they always had.

The family might feel some peace now, but this doesn’t mean Mei’s death doesn’t affect them anymore. As of 2024, no one knows where her parents are. There is a high chance they might have passed away of old age by now.

Even so, her living brothers and sisters still carry the painful memories of how she died. By choosing to stay out of the public eye, they’ve kept their self-respect while dealing with deep sadness.

Additional Information

  • Although Richard Ramirez was identified as the assailant in Mei Leung’s case, Kamala Harris decided not to arrest him for the muder due to concerns from Los Angeles prosecutors regarding the potential implications of a trial.
  • If Mei Leung had lived a happy life and the tragic event had never occurred, she would be in her fifties as of 2024.
  • There is no specific documentary focused on Mei Leung’s case; however, her murder is frequently referenced in the media, particularly in relation to Richard Ramirez, the “Night Stalker.”
