Carter Hart Illness And Health Update
On 23 January 2024, the Philadelphia Flyers shared that their goalie, Carter Hart, had asked for and been given a break from his duties for personal reasons.
The team’s coach, John Tortorella, confirmed that Hart is not suffering from any health issues or injuries after Hart was absent from the day’s practice.
The Flyers have stated that they won’t further comment on why Hart is taking time off.
Lately, Hart’s performance in the goal has been a bit shaky, especially during a recent game against the Colorado Avalanche.
Carter was taken out in the third period after letting in five goals. Despite this, his season’s stats are still respectable.
However, it’s clear that both Tortorella and the fans are starting to favor the new goalie, Sam Ersson, who has been performing exceptionally well since November.
Naturally, there’s a lot of speculation about why Hart asked for a break. Theories range from personal health issues to problems within the team or even family matters.
The Alberta native had a severe illness in December 2023 which caused him to lose a lot of weight and kept him from playing for 19 days.
In a conversation with Jordan Hall from NBC Sports Philadelphia, Hart mentioned that his illness comes and goes.
Carter stated that he’s finally figured out what’s causing it and is taking steps to address and resolve the issue.
The goaltender was hopeful that he would soon be able to put this issue behind him and start feeling better.
Another Possible Reason For Carter Hart’s Absence
Fans hope that Carter Hart’s leave of absence isn’t related to this serious issue.
A lawsuit was filed against Hockey Canada in April 2022. The lawsuit claimed that a woman was sexually assaulted by members of the 2018 World Junior Championship team for Canada.
Carter Hart was the starting goalie for the World Junior Championship at the time. The lawsuit was settled in May 2022.
Dillon Dube, a Calgary Flames forward and also a member of that Canadian team, took an indefinite leave of absence on 21 January.
The Flames stated that the leave was due to mental health reasons. There’s no confirmation that Hart’s and Dube’s leaves are connected.
The NHL started its own investigation into the lawsuit shortly after it was filed, but there’s been no update.
In September 2022, Hart told Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia that he was “fully cooperating” and “respecting the process” of the league’s investigation.
He added that he can’t talk about the matter and wished he could. He gave a similar response in his end-of-season press conference in April 2023.
It’s important to stress that no official reason for Hart’s leave has been given, and all the “explanations” out there are just speculation.
